The King's Wharf development site is ideally located for a large-scale, urban waterfront, mixed-use development. The topography of the site is mostly flat and facilitates underground parking, terraced condominiums facing the water, easy public access and seamless integration with the Dartmouth Downtown Core. The King's Wharf development is aligned with the strategic HRM Regional Plan objective of drawing people to the Dartmouth waterfront to live, work and play. It will play a key role in the revitalization of the downtown core.
This concept recognizes that the former site of the Dartmouth Marine Slips site is one of the most prominent properties in HRM. It provides an iconic retail/commercial tower that will draw attention to the Dartmouth waterfront and the redevelopment of the Marine Slips land. The balance of the development will contain an array of residential, retail, and office accommodations. The layout also provides a variety of building heights and placements designed to provide a pedestrian friendly community, including access to the waterfront through walkways, park areas, and berthing for recreational boaters.
Buildings on the foreground of the development will evoke the historical and modern, wharf-side warehouses common along the Harbourside. The buildings behind will gradually increase in height. These taller structures will have reflective glass exteriors and be spaced to allow significant views between them for the residents of Dartmouth Cove. Every aspect of the development’s architecture will reflect and pay tribute to the nautical history of its setting.
The proposed development will add a welcome vitality to the waterfront. It will bring new residents to the area to support established Downtown Dartmouth businesses as well as the new business on the development itself. It will also draw visitors to the area to enjoy the shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and the largest marina complex on the Harbour.
